What Is Grouper?
Aetna has partnered with Grouper to offer a free club matching service to its members.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Grouper has temporarily suspended its service of matching members into physical clubs, but it will help people who are sheltering at home join virtual clubs based around fun activities and interests. Grouper’s virtual clubs include line dancing, Tai Chi, gardening, painting and drawing, knitting and crochet and more.
Does it cost money?
The use of Grouper Virtual Clubs is free.
The matching service for In Person clubs is free. Some In Person clubs have membership fees and/or associated costs. The Grouper team will work to find an In Person club that meets your needs and budget. For those In Person clubs that do have membership dues, typical fees range from $15 to $60 per year.
How does the matching service work?
On the Grouper landing page, you can enter your interests, as well as a few other questions. Grouper will then use that information to search their network of virtual clubs. They will email you information about the club that best meets your criteria and if you’re interested, they will make an introduction to the group leader.
How do I know if the clubs are any good?
Grouper subjects all club leaders to an extensive vetting and training process.
Are these clubs age-appropriate?
All of clubs in the Grouper are either open to all ages or are specifically oriented towards a 50+ demographic. They will work with you to find a group that you are comfortable with.
What technology do I need to have to access virtual clubs?
Grouper’s virtual clubs require internet access and a device such as a smartphone, laptop, tablet or computer.
I am not finding a group that meets my interest, what do I do?
On the landing page at the bottom of the list of interest types, there is a field labeled “Other.” This is where you can enter the type of club you are looking for, and Grouper will search for options that fit your interests.
Where do the clubs meet?
Grouper will find a club that matches your interests and meets either virtually, or at a location convenient to you, based on the parameters you give them. As a general rule, for in-person clubs, they strive to place members in clubs that are within a 5-mile radius of the member’s home.
Can I invite friends to join the club too, or is it just for Aetna members?
You are welcome to bring your friends. Grouper will advise on best practices.
